Worth keeping an eye on this H5N1 virus mutation seen in a hospitalized teen in Canada. This video starts out rather technical but is worth a watch. This virus has potential to cause serious problems but is still being analyzed. This thread is a way to stay current on developments. Hopefully it will be a short thread.

Towards the end of the video it sounds like Fauci is saying that human to human transmission is not known to be established in this new mutation and he has dealt with this virus since 1997. He didn't sound panicked, but said it is concerning that pigs could serve as the incubator for mutations that could lead to human-to-human transmission because they are on farms with cows and chickens and can catch it from both and can carry the human form, so a mutation could occur inside the pig that could cause an outbreak in humans.

Pig farming is actually one of the worst human health hazards - besides torturing and eating creatures that test with the same intelligence level as three-year-old human children. I know it’s wildly socially aberrant to say because really kind, good people eat pigs and they “taste good”, but there is a shit-ton of karma imbedded in that industry.

This update is from the Health Minister in B.C. and they have observed "no evidence" of human-to-human contagion from the teen that is in critical care in BC. His infection is traced to wild geese in Canada, so it is a good idea to not feed geese these days. There are additional cases in the U.S., but are traced to direct contact with dairy cows and unpasteurized milk. There is one case of a child in California whose source of infection is still undetermined. H5N1 is the most serious form of influenza, so it is worth remaining aware of any cases and mutations.
